Finding your way has never been simpler
Pourquoi est-il si facile de trouver l ’ aire de restauration d ’ un centre commercial , alors qu ’ il faut un GPS ou une boussole lorsque vient le temps de se rendre au service de radiologie d ’ un hôpital ? Les administrateurs d ’ hôpitaux font leur possible , mais les rénovations et les ajouts exécutés au fil des ans aboutissent parfois à des configurations déroutantes . Ça vous dit quelque chose ?
Heureusement , ce ne sera pas le cas au site Glen . En effet , les concepteurs du nouveau site Glen ont suivi la tendance adoptée par un grand nombre des centres commerciaux , stades et aéroports les plus modernes du monde , qui ont mis en œuvre ce que les experts en design appellent des « techniques d ’ orientation ».
Grâce à l ’ utilisation de couleurs , de symboles universels et d ’ un langage simple affiché en gros caractères , le site Glen a mis en place des techniques d ’ orientation évoluées , évidentes dès que l ’ on s ’ approche de l ’ hôpital . Par exemple , toutes les entrées publiques comprennent des zones de débarquement comme celles des aéroports .

Why is it that we have little problem finding the food court at the mall , but when it ’ s time to find radiology at the hospital , we need a GPS or inner compass ? Hospital administrators do their best , but confusing layouts can result from years of hospital renovations and building additions . Sound familiar ?
That won ’ t be the case at the Glen site . Just as many of the world ’ s more modern shopping centres , stadiums , and airports have implemented what design experts call wayfinding , developers for the new Glen site have jumped on board .
The days of getting lost and losing precious time are ancient history . Through the use of colours , universal symbols , and simple language posted in large font , the Glen has implemented cutting edge wayfinding techniques . Those techniques come into sharp focus as soon as you approach the hospital . For one , all public entrances will have airport-style drop-off zones .
“ Even though everything is under one roof , each institution keeps its own identity with its own colour ,” says Marie-Luc Jodoin , Coordinator for the McGill University Health Centre ( MUHC ). “ For example , the royal blue represents the Royal Victoria and turquoise the Montreal Children ’ s Hospital .” Apart from giving the Glen site its dynamic look , the colours are also functional and correspond to wayfinding signs inside the building for ease of movement .
Inside , a two-storey galleria , or main thoroughfare , winds its way through a large part of the hospital . It is encased in glass and allows natural light to filter in and help guide the way . Jodoin says people will be able to find their way easily and efficiently , whether entering from the front drop-off or underground parking .
