by Roger Smith, PhD MUD RUN TRAINING TRIO Mud runs are the great equalizing sport. They attract people from all walks of life and from all fitness practices. You will find weight lifters, runners, bicyclers, tri-athletes, group fitness enthusiasts, weekend warriors (softball, soccer, basketball), and the P90x, CrossFit, and Insanity crowd. Everyone is eager to join in the fun and test their fitness levels. Few of these people have trained specifically for mud running or obstacles courses. So they all 23 ask the same question before or after their first race … “What can I do to get in better shape for one of these races?” If you already have a physical activity that you enjoy, I would say stick with that … enjoy it more by doing it a little more. In the beginning, there is no need to drop what you like and try to replace it with something completely foreign. You can consider that after you have a dozen races in your shorts. So, if you are lifting three days a week, try adding some of the training trio listed here. If you are taking group classes, then do the trio between classes.
