AUTUMN TRAINING ON THE LAKE Rod Thomas We have had a busy period for training during the April to June period, with between 15 and 30 juniors and adults out training most Saturday mornings. The Summer 8 week Learn to Sail program with 8 adults and 6 juniors finished early April, followed closely by an 8 week Autumn/early winter program with 6 adults. A big welcome to the new members who have undertaken one of these programs. Most weeks from 11am there has also been ASC 'Green Fleet' sailing for juniors and adults who have completed a Learn to Sail or equivalent program and want to continue to develop their skills. Numbers for the Green fleet program have varied according to the weather conditions and people's commitments. Thanks to Don McKenzie, Rod Thomas, Geoff Saliba, James Catton, Ron Lackington and Rob Clark for their continuing support of the Learn to Sail programs, and Rod Caddaye for managing the Green Fleet group. More Instructors, Assistant Instructors, and Powerboat operators are needed to share the load. Yachting Victoria Instructor training programs are available. Contact Don McKenzie, ASC's Training Centre Principal, if you are interested in being involved as a participant in a training program or assisting with program delivery. In May and June we have had two additional junior training groups in operation on Saturday mornings. Each Saturday in May a 'Sorrento Green' group of junior boats, mainly Optis, have been coached by Brian Case, the training manager at Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club. We had Fraser, Emmerson, Grace and Anna from ASC as part of this group which enjoyed sailing on Albert Park Lake in the balmy Melbourne Autumn weather. We have also had a Victorian Minnow Association ' Green Fleet' group sailing every second Saturday morning, with one of our juniors Zeke, participating. From early June we should have more Optis and Minnows from Bay Clubs sailing in Saturday afternoon club races, with the finish of the Junior Icicle Regatta program at Black Rock at the end of May. NATIONAL TEAMS RACING REGATTA Don McKenzie On the weekend of June 7th & 8th, Albert Sailing Club hosted a National Teams racing regatta. This was not a schools event but one for adults. Teams from Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania as well as Victoria attended. On Saturday there were more than 50 races. On Sunday the round robin series was finished and an elimination final run. Over 140 meat and salad roll were produced to feed the volunteers and competitors. Doug’s bar had a mild work out with preferences being Boag’s and Stella. This logistically was a huge event. Albert Sailing Club was supported by a group of members who worked all weekend to make this event a profitable one for the Club. We should all thank; Rod Thomas, Leslie, Silke, Cindy, Dot, Bill, Kelly, Rod Caddaye, Mitch, Paul and Aaron for their efforts. Yachting Victoria hired our start boat and one of the R I B’s. The only bad part of the event was one of the visiting crew members kicked the stairway wall putting a hole in the plaster. The Yachting Victoria representative has accepted responsibility for the repair of the wall. There was an enquiry as to whether the Club would be willing to host the event on the same weekend next year. They were advised to make a formal approach in the coming months. This event earned reasonable income for the Club. SSCBC/ASC Opti training group, May 2014 Page 10
