From the Chairman
David A. Fleming, MD, MA, FACP
Welcome to the Department of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Mizzou, as our
campus is fondly referred to, is the first Land Grant University west of the Mississippi, the flagship
campus of the four-campus University of Missouri System. Our School of Medicine is supported by
a state-of-the-art, 280 bed teaching hospital with mid-Missouri’s largest multi-specialty group with
nearly 70 specialties and sub specialties. Our health system includes the University Hospital and
Clinics, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, Missouri Orthopaedic Institute,
Missouri Psychiatric Center, Missouri Rehabilitation Center, and University Physicians. Academic
affiliates of the health system include our medical school, which is made up of 21 departments,
The Sinclair School of Nursing, and The School of Health Professions. These affiliates are comprised
of nearly 6,000 clinicians, scientists, educators, and other health professionals providing the best
possible care to the patients of mid-Missouri. For more information regarding our health care teams,
services, and facilities, please visit muhealth.org.
We at Mizzou are passionate about our six department pillars: clinical, diversity, education,
professionalism, quality improvement, and research, which are the focus of our efforts and
continued growth. The Department of Medicine’s vision is to be exceptional by being known as an
innovator and leader in exemplary patient care, excellence in education, professional development,
translational research, and by being the employer of choice in Mid-Missouri. We strive for continual advancement, in all that we do, from our
expanding and evolving residency and fellowship programs, to our innovative and robust research initiatives, to our practice of evidence based
medicine in development of new clinical service lines and offerings.
I am grateful to lead this wonderful group of faculty, residents, fellows, students, and staff who strive to make our world a better place through
enhanced patient care, dedication in teaching our next generation of physicians and scientists, and finding new treatments and techniques for the
health issues we face. It is my pleasure to serve you.
I invite you to browse this annual report including 2011-2013 activities to learn about the people and programs which make up our stellar
department.
Sincerely yours,
