Letter From The Director
The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of MissouriColumbia was established in 1955, under the direction of Thomas W. Burns, MD; and
was followed by the establishment of the Cosmopolitan International Diabetes &
Endocrinology Center in 1984. James R. Sowers, MD, became the Division Director in
2003. The division is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence in
the areas of teaching, patient care and research.
Our division continues to receive national and international recognition for its
scholarly activities. Our faculty members are involved in teaching within and outside
of the institution and carry out both clinical and basic research. Faculty and fellows
publish and present a substantial number of scientific findings each year in national
and international platforms. Fellows participate in clinical and basic research and
chose an option to tailor the type and amount of research accomplished during the
fellowship according to individual interests and career goals.
