Cardiovascular Medicine
Letter From The Director
The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine made outstanding progress in 2011-2013
in its core missions of patient care, education, research, and service. Our faculty
members are nationally recognized for their expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of
cardiovascular disorders. We are deeply committed to providing cardiovascular care that
is comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based. Our primary practice sites are
University Hospital and the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital. We also staff
cardiology outreach clinics in Marshall, Boonville, Macon, Fulton, and Jefferson City. In
2011-2013 we saw considerable growth and development of cardiovascular services,
as outlined in the Overview of Clinical Programs and Services section below. Division
faculty members also pride themselves on their commitment to our teaching mission.
Our learners include medical students, medical residents, cardiology fellows, practicing
physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Over the past 3 years our group
also continued its tradition of excellence in research and scholarship, publishing scores
of papers and conducting a wide array of extramurally funded research projects. Lastly,
Cardiovascular Medicine faculty members continued to serve our university, community,
region, and profession through a breadth of activities, ranging from educational
presentations to lay audiences to serving on editorial boards, scientific peer review
committees, and major professional committees, including those of the American Heart
Association and American College of Cardiology. Division faculty members strongly value
their relationships with patients and referring physicians, and we look forward to meeting
