As MU’s School of Medicine strengthens its commitment to train
the next generation of physicians, the Department of Medicine is
embarking on campaigns to endow faculty positions in memory
of Dr. Charles Mengel and Dr. Michael Perry.
Dr. Chuck Mengel unquestionably was one of the toughest
department chairs who demanded a lot out of his trainees
and faculty. A master clinician, his standards were incredibly
high, and those who trained with him worked long hours with
unsurpassed dedication to the growth of their intellect and
skills as clinicians. Dr. Mengel completed medical training at
Johns Hopkins Hospital, Duke University Medical Center and
the National Cancer Institute. He held highly successful faculty
appointments in the medical schools at Duke University, Ohio
Charles Mengel, MD
State University, University of Missouri and the University of
Kansas before his retirement in 1998.
For 35 years, Dr. Michael Perry had a distinguished medical
career at the University of Missouri and was respected worldwide
for his devotion to cancer research. Prior to his tenure at MU,
he completed his medical training at Wayne State University
in Detroit, University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic. He was a
superior clinician and an accomplished researcher who took
great pride in training future physicians. Dr. Perry excelled in
all of these roles, but nothing meant as much to him as seeing
patients. He truly had a gift for caring for people.
The legacies of both Dr. Mengel and Dr. Perry live on in the
physicians they trained as well as in the patients and families
whose lives they touched. The Department of Medicine would
Michael Perry, MD
like to solidify their legacies through these faculty endowments,
which will serve as lasting symbols of their influence at the
School of Medicine.
