Early MVHS yearbooks are now online
MVHA is excited to announce that the MV Library is now hosting online a collection of Mountain View High School yearbooks. This is a unique and valuable digital resource that includes the 1904 – 1929 yearbooks. These books are part of the MVHA collection of artifacts and memorabilia.
The MV Library worked with a program available through California Revealed, https:// californiarevealed. org, a statewide initiative that helps public libraries, archives, museums, and historical societies, to digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials.
A press release from the Library states“ The yearbooks contain the names and photographs of faculty and students, as well as information about student activities, advertisements from local businesses, written reflections, short fiction, and inside jokes.
Most of these early yearbooks also contain details about MVHS alumni and their lives post-graduation.
Inside you will find details about the experience of World War I, the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919, and the Prune & Apricot Exposition. As you move through the collection from the oldest to the most recent issue you can perceive the growing importance of secondary education and the emergence of youth culture facilitated by the automobile.”
The yearbook collection can be explored through the Mountain View Public Library’ s pages at California Revealed: https:// californiarevealed. org / partner / mountain-viewpublic-library? f % 5B0 % 5D = search _ block _ media _ type % 3AText Internet Archive: https:// archive. org / details / mountainviewlibrary? and % 5B % 5D = subject % 3A % 22 High + school + students % 22
Looking at the yearbooks offers a great perspective on life in a small prosperous farming community. Even if you didn’ t grow up here and are not familiar with the family names of early residents, looking through the books is a fun way to see how people lived over a century ago.
