“ Votes for MV Women ” Suffrage meeting November 1

Fall 2020 Event Recap

“ Votes for MV Women ” Suffrage meeting November 1

The latest virtual meeting of the MVHA had a different format- a taped presentation covering the suffrage efforts of Mountain View women prepared by Pamela Baird . Then Nick Perry and Pamela reviewed photos and locations of some of the historical sites and people mentioned in the presentation . This was followed by a review by Dr . Amy Ellison , curator of the exhibit on the 100th anniversary of Suffrage at the Los Altos History Museum . A questions and answers discussion followed .
The genesis of the presentation was research that Pamela did for the suffrage exhibit at the Los Altos History Museum . She reviewed many issues of the Mountain View Register-Leader newspaper at the History Center in the MV Library . Pamela was surprised to learn how active local women were in the 1911 suffrage effort to pass an amendment to the California state constitution granting women the right to vote . She thought “ here is a story to tell ” and proceeded to do more research , both online and through the city archives .
A twenty minute presentation is the result of the research , which is available for viewing on the MVHA website : www . mountainviewhistorical . org
