In anticipation of our May 7 event on the local history of Mexican-American civil rights , let ’ s take a closer look at a photo that helps illustrate one of Mountain View ’ s unique connections to this important topic . Here we see members of Mountain View ’ s Mexican-American community gathered in the vestibule of Saint Joseph Catholic Church to sing “ Las Mañanitas ” in honor of the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe . The priest Fr . Donald McDonnell visible at center right is Father Donald McDonnell . When this photo was taken in the late 1940s , Fr . McDonnell was working closely with Mountain View ’ s growing Mexican population . He helped community members , many of whom were working their way out of poverty , organize mutual aide societies like the Club Estrella ( which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year ) and the Guadalupe Federal Credit Union . In the early 1950s , Fr . McDonnell left Mountain View to serve the Mexican community of East San Jose , and helped establish Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission Chapel in 1953 . There , he befriended Cesar Chavez and became an early mentor to the civil rights leader , introducing him to teachings on spirituality , labor rights , human rights , and social justice . The parish hall now bears McDonnell ’ s name and the site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2017 .
