Remembrances

Nick Galiotto

Nick Galiotto , a prominent Mountain View civic leader and friend to many in the MVHA , has passed away . First hired by the Police Department in 1961 , Galiotto was credited with modernizing the police agency . He served for 26 years on the police force , rising to the rank of captain . In an era when most police of�icers had little or no college education , Galiotto was a graduate of Santa Clara University . Later he earned his law degree from the Peninsula College of Law .
Galiotto served on the City Council for six years . He was appointed as mayor in 2006 . During his time on Council he advocated for businesses , housing , parks , and environmental sustainability . His service on Council was recognized in a resolution of appreciation that was passed by the Council January 6 , 2009 .
He was also a longtime member of the Mountain View Kiwanis Club and the Mountain View Historical Association where he volunteered as a member of our Board of Directors for many years . We are so thankful for all the ways Nick gave back to our community and extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family .

Vincent Cortez

MVHA member Vincent Cortez , father of newsletter committee chair John Cortez and brother-in-law of our former ways & means committee chair , Richard Espinosa , peacefully passed away in his sleep on the morning of February 8 , 2022 .
Vincent was born in Morgan Hill and grew up in Gilroy . After a short stint in the National Guard he moved to Mountain View after meeting and marrying Dolores Anne Espinosa . Vincent worked as a janitor for various companies before starting a janitorial business with his father-in-law , John B . Espinosa . In the late 1980s he became a facilities manager for Computer Curriculum Corporation in Sunnyvale until his retirement .

Helene Hughes Bailey

We are sad to share the news of the passing of Helene Hughes Bailey , who passed away due to complications from COVID-19 on January 27 , 2022 . Helene served as the MVHA ’ s Hospitality Chair through much of the 2010s . Her gracious hospitality and creative decorations added a special touch to our quarterly events at the historic Adobe Building .
Helene was born in Palo
Alto on December 15 , 1940 and grew up in Mountain View on small farm located at 2106 Stierlin Road ( now N . Shoreline Blvd .) on land now occupied by Shoreline Amphitheater .
Helen attended Whisman School and was a graduate of Mountain View High School on Castro Street ( class of 1958 ). She became a hairdresser and lived abroad in several countries . After returning to California , she worked in Palo Alto and Los Altos . She was active in Quota Club and was a longtime volunteer at the Los Altos Art and Wine Festival . She was a servant in singles groups of Peninsula Bible Church , in Menlo Presbyterian Church and in youth ministry at Jubilee Christian Center . In 2017 she married Bob Bailey and moved to Rio Vista .
We offer our condolences to Helene ’ s family and friends as she will be missed and fondly remembered .
In retirement Vincent volunteered for the Community Service Food Bank in Mountain View and worked part-time for the Santa Clara Sheriff Department doing event security at Stanford University . In addition to the MVHA , Vincent was a proud member of the Native Sons of the Golden West , Vintage Mustang Owners Association , Nor-Cal Shelby American Automobile Club and National Railway Historical Society .
