Join us on Saturday , April 30 for our spring meeting and discover the intertwined history of one of Mtn . View ’ s oldest neighborhoods and the city ’ s fi rst major industrial operation , the Pacifi c Press Publishing Association !
When the Pacifi c Press , a publishing house owned by the Seventh Day Adventist Church , moved from Oakland to Mountain View in 1904 , it transformed the small town ( population ~ 600 ) by bringing with it 100 Adventist families . The sudden infl ux of this sizeable new contingent of residents changed Mountain View physically , politically , and socially . The Adventist community built a church , schools , and dozens of homes in the neighborhood immediately south of the Pacifi c Press campus on Villa Street . Although this neighborhood , now known as Shoreline West , has changed a great deal over the decades , many reminders of its fascinating history can still be found throughout the neighborhood .
At our April 30 webinar , Mountain View historian Nick Perry will share a photo slide show that brings the history of Pacifi c Press and Shoreline West to light . We will also be joined by representatives from the Shoreline West Association of Neighbors ( aka “ SWAN ”) who will share the history and current happenings of their neighborhood organization , founded in 1994 .
And the following day , Sunday , May 1 , the MVHA is excited to join SWAN at the neighborhood ’ s annual ice cream social at Mariposa Park , located at 305 Mariposa Avenue . Between 2:00 and 4:00 p . m ., come to our table to say hello to some of our friendly MVHA volunteers and see our historic display . We hope to see you there !
