Looking Back: Photos from the Archive Members of the 1977–78 Black Student Union at Mountain View High School on Castro Street In the 1970s, Mountain View High School on Castro Street was known for its racial diversity. Although the Black population of the school was small compared to other racial groups, it was large enough to support a Black Student Union (BSU) throughout the decade. In the 1977–78 school year, the BSU members pictured here organized a Black History Week that included speeches, poetry readings, a musical performance, and a fashion show. When the school closed in 1981, the reassignment of its students to Los Altos High School and the “new” Mountain View (formerly Awalt) High School led to the establishment of Black Student Unions on both campuses for the first time in the 1981–82 school year.
