Mountain View’s Castro Street has undergone many transformations over the course of
its 150+ year history. From the dusty dirt roadway and wooden plank sidewalks of
the 1860s, to the four busy lanes of traffic, narrow sidewalks, and neon signs of the
1940s, to the Parisian-inspired revamp in 1990 that transformed Castro Street into the
pedestrian-friendly destination it is today.
Today, Castro Street is undergoing another dramatic, albeit temporary, transformation in
response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Physically-distanced outdoor dining has replaced
vehicle traffic, offering a glimpse of what a fully-pedestrianized Castro Street might look
like in the future. Join us as MVHA President Nick Perry and Gehl designer John Bela
share the story of Castro Street’s past, present, and future!

dynamic, and resilient urban human habitats. A pioneer in user-generated
urbanism, John has successfully completed many projects that involve radical
new formulations of social space. He is a senior lecturer at California
College of Arts in San Francisco and a distinguished lecturer at UC Berkeley.
John holds degrees in landscape architecture and environmental design,
biochemistry, and sculpture.
