Looking Back : Images from the Archives
A glimpse of the future arrived at Mountain View on March 19 , 1934 . This sleek train was the M-10000 , a three-car trainset , with a combined power / baggage / railway post office car and two trailing passenger coaches . The trainset was articulated , making the train operate as one integrated unit rather than as a separable locomotive and cars . It was the first streamlined passenger train to be operated in the United States . It was painted Armour Yellow on the sides with a Leaf Brown nose , roof , rear , and lower panels . Red striping separated the two main colors .
The trainset was delivered to Union Pacific on February 12 , 1934 , and was sent on a 13,000 mile publicity tour across the US . About a million people toured it and the stops became local media sensations . Called the “ Streamliner ” the trainset was operated by Union Pacific in revenue service between Kansas City , Missouri and Salina , Kansas . The trainset was retired at the end of 1941 and sold the next year as scrap for the war effort .
