Focus Areas
Incoming Master of Public Health (MPH) students will be able to choose from a pre-constructed Social and
Behavioral Health Sciences, Health Policy and Management, and Public Health Analysis (Epidemiology or
Biostatistics) Focus area or a Generalist Track. Each Students will be required to enroll in six (6) credit hours of
focus area courses and three (3) credits of elective (within the department) courses. Students choosing a focus
area should indicate this intention at the end of their 2nd semester) in a formal documented meeting with their
advisor prior to registering for their second year courses.
The objective and courses selections for each Focus area are as follows:
Behavioral Health Sciences (BHS) Objective
The Master Public Health (MPH) Behavioral Health Sciences focus area provides foundation for students to be
trained professionals who are able to critically assess, integrate and apply acquired knowledge and skills to work
in a broad array of urban public health settings; effectively coordinate and facilitate inter-agency and community
collaborations; and contribute to the planning, management and assessment of culturally appropriate social and
behavioral health services and programs. Students following this focus area are expected to move on to careers
where they are able to effectively apply social/behavioral theories and methods, as well as community-based
participatory processes to promote healthy lifestyles and enhance the health of the populations that they serve,
while being mindful of and sensitive to the community’s cultural context.
BHS Courses
Incoming Master of Public Health (MPH) students choosing to follow the Behavioral focus area must enroll in
two Behavioral Health courses found below and choose one elective course
