Congratulations, Sharieffa!

After working with MSCCN for one and a half months, Sharieffa accepted a position working with Youth Emergency Shelters and Family Services!

And she’s just been promoted!

Hiring Challenge: The challenge I faced with being a military spouse was both rewarding and difficult. I had chosen to not utilize my college degree and not work, but I was able to be at home with my daughter and be there for my husband. As a result of the choice to not work during army life, I was unable to maintain my social work license, and when it was time to think about transitioning, it was difficult to explain to civilians why I chose to stay at home and have that gap in my work history.

Assistance Received: Micki Auten motivated me to keep pursuing job opportunities. By her calling and emailing me, I was encouraged to not give up because I did not want to disappoint her, myself, and my family.

Result of Assistance: I am now working full time at a non-profit organization. I recently got promoted as well to a Youth Service Specialist II where I will be doing more case management and assessments of the clients.

Value of Experience: I think it is important for military spouses and veterans to be patient with themselves and to be confident in their abilities. It is also necessary to admit the need for assistance and to accept the assistance even when it may hurt one’s ego. I struggled with my ego and I had to come to terms with the need for an extra voice of guidance in the process of transitioning from Army life.
