PREPARATION: Before the event
COLLECT TOOLS: A networking resume (25), business cards (100) and an updated LinkedIn Account.
RESEARCH: Companies in attendance, workshops offered, and informational interview signup.
PRACTICE: Elevator pitch, industry-related questions, and recruiting questions.
PACK: A bottle of water, breathe mints, and job search tools. *You might consider a notebook to write down information learned about the companies, a place to tape the business cards next to the notes, and a neat way to carry around items you brought.
EXECUTE: During the event
PLAN: Walk around and plan who you want to visit, pick your top 5. After you talk to those recruiters, move strategically around to talk to other companies that interest you.
FOLLOW UP: After the event
CONNECT: On LinkedIn® with the recruiters that you meet .
APPLY: To the positions that you learned about.
NETWORK: With recruiters to find out if they know about any additional jobs that might be a good fit.
The best networkers are both PASSIVE and ACTIVE in the right environments and use online and in-person networking skills to find opportunities and get referrals to positions. Networking is still the #1 way to get a job so mastering this skill and practicing it at a job fair is a great way to begin building your network.
