Update your resume. As you begin your search, you need to have your resume ready. This powerful tool is what will get you in front of an interviewer. Look for resume trainings or consider enlisting the services of a CASY & MSCCN Employment Specialist. An effective and clean resume will grab the attention of a recruiter.

You will need to customize your resume for each position to which you apply. For this reason, keep both hard copies to take notes on and digital copies to continuously edit.

Get familiar with job-seeking tools. In order to effectively search for a job, you need to know the tools that are available to you. Also, take advantage of databases and search tools such as Indeed and USAJobs. Not only do these sites allow you to search for available positions, but you can often apply directly from your computer or mobile device. You can upload your resumes, cover letters, and any other forms that may be required, such as transcripts or certifications.

But use company websites and connections too. Don’t rely solely on search databases for job postings. Look directly at company websites for employment opportunities. You don’t want to miss out on a great position just because it wasn’t listed on a search site! Be sure to put the word out to your network that you are looking for a job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 70% of jobs are found through networking. Take advantage of the employment assistance offered on your nearest base, which can provide vital information, like contacts for companies hiring locally and opportunities for training and career education.

Prepare your wardrobe. What will you wear to interviews? What about second and third interviews? Make sure your outfits fit properly and are ready for you to step into should you get a call to come in at 9:00 AM tomorrow. Your appearance speaks volumes to an interviewer. Be prepared to make a great first impression at a moment’s notice.

Develop a two-minute commercial. You know you will be asked to tell an interviewer about yourself and your career goals. Be prepared to clearly articulate these. Be ready to “sell yourself” to any potential employer you may meet. Your “two-minute commercial” should include a summary of your qualifications and experience, your career goals with this company, your reasons for wanting to work for this company, and the benefits you will bring to this company if they hire you. This may change slightly for each position, but be ready for it!

Remember, preparation equals pay-off! The more prepared you are to find and land a job, the more likely you are to land the job you want!
