3.How do I know that a volunteer position will help me meet my career goals?

Every volunteer position is important in helping you develop skills and do things you love. Unfortunately, not all of the things we enjoy and have an aptitude for pay well. So, you have to balance finding what is right for you and your career goal. You first have to have a clear career goal to determine if the volunteer position will help you meet that goal. Then, compare the skills and qualifications of the position and match them with skills you have used in the volunteer role.

4. How do I include volunteer positions on my resume?

That depends on your work history and the relevance of the position to your career goal. When you write your resume, it should be specific to your career goal. If you volunteered at an animal shelter as a vet tech and are applying to become a vet tech, you should include that in your experience section. If you volunteered as a vet tech and want to be a data analyst, you might not put it in your experience section because it would confuse a potential employer. Instead, put it under community involvement.

5.Do I have to tell potential employers that positions were volunteer?

Yes, do not misrepresent any experience. If you say a position was paid and later they find out you “gave inaccurate information on your application,” you can be terminated. I once gave a reference for a volunteer and explained that she showed up at my office 3 days a week for 20 hours, studied English two days a week, and took free community classes. If she is this dependable in a volunteer capacity, imagine what she will do as a worker!?! She was hired and has remained with the company for almost 10 years.
