I DON’T KNOW WHERE I’LL BE NEXT WEEK. HOW CAN I PLAN FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS?
Start by creating a job search binder, and make a commitment to work on it a little every day. Then EVERY DAY set a timer for 15 minutes; spend that time working on ONE ITEM. You will be surprised how quickly your job search materials come together and a general plan forms.
WHERE DO I START?
Start with identifying 2 out of 3 of the following: your LOCATION, INDUSTRY, and FUNCTION.
LOCATION- City/State where you would like to work
INDUSTRY- The type of work you would like to do (Equivalent to MOS)
FUNCTION- Position in the type of work (Equivalent to Duty)
If you are undecided, set a timer for 5 minutes and write down the top 3 that come
to mind in any of the categories. You can also use a tool like the one USAA provides, Best Locations for Veterans, to help you narrow it down.

WHAT IF I NEED MORE EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS?
Do a little research! Certain careers require certifications or specific degrees. Many companies and colleges offer free training through established veteran programs. IVMF, for example, offers free certifications through Syracuse University…ONLINE! If you are still active duty, go to the nearest education center; they might offer testing for the certification or tuition assistance.
HOW DO I GET OVER THE GUILT?
I’m not sure you can just “get over” it. Many veterans have disclosed that they feel “disloyal” to the service by developing a plan for the future. I say, you have served your country and given your time. It is important that you also take care of yourself and your family because your time in the service will end. If the guilt is overwhelming, try to plan it like a deployment or permanent change of station.
The future belongs to those who plan for it. Start today to prepare for what you want to achieve tomorrow!
