Self-Sabotage...

Are you getting in your own way?

By: Amy Rossi

We’re all human, we all make mistakes—right? Mistakes are a natural part of life, like breathing (only more painful). The good news is we work through them, learn from them, and move on.

But is there ever a time when mistakes become more than occasional errors?

If you have reached a point where you recognize the mistakes you’re making because you’re seeing the same ones again and again (to your detriment), it’s time to consider why you’re seeing these mistakes. Sometimes mistakes are more than the result of careless behavior. Sometimes, they are acts of self-sabotage.

Although “self-sabotage” is used as a blanket term, there are actually two types, intentional and unintentional.

When it comes to the job search, intentional self-sabotage can look like the following:

-You see a job that you want and you don’t bother applying for it.

-You don’t show up for an interview.

-You turn down an interview, even though you don’t have a job or are unhappy in your current position.

-You refuse to consider a job you might love because it’s out of your travel area.

-You refuse to consider a job because the pay is too low. You turn it down without even trying to negotiate.

Intentional acts of self-sabotage are moments when you make a conscious effort to opt out, to deny yourself the option of saying “yes.” These actions are a matter of choice: you and you alone are choosing not to pursue an opportunity.

The second type of self-sabotage, which is unintentional,

Some mistakes are easy to identify and fix. Others are harder to spot.
