Amy Rossi: As you mention, demonstrating your value isn’t just for entrepreneurs; it’s something that job seekers need to be able to do too. If you could give advice to transitioning military members and Veterans regarding communicating their value, what would it be?
Kevin Barber: Companies want to hire Veterans for many of their skills—operating in stressful situations, attention to detail, conflict resolution—the list goes on. But sometimes, it seems that Veterans think the company is going to adapt to them. It’s just like the military—the military didn’t adapt to you; you adapted to it. You have to get your foot in the door; you’ll get a look because of the skills you bring to the table. You have to adapt to the work environment to grow in the company.
Sell yourself, and once you get in, you can be what I call an “intrapreneur.” Bring the skills you have to the company and help to impact their bottom line in order to move up in the company.
Veteran Energy is a Texas electricity company providing Texas with competitive electricity rates throughout the state. You can rely on the integrity, strength and ability of Veteran Energy to provide superior rates, products, customer service and “The Power to Give Back.” Veteran Energy was the first certified 100% veteran- owned retail electric provider in Texas.
It began in 2010, when energy executive and U.S. military Veteran Kevin Barber determined he could do more for America’s Veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families. The result was Veteran Energy and The Power to Give Back, the first energy company devoted to providing support in the form of financial, employment and emotional assistance.
