My background is in government work in the Washington, DC area. When my husband’s Navy career moved us to San Diego, I struggled to find positions that were a good fit with my skillset and made sense in terms of a career track and my own professional goals. During my job search, I was only finding one to two jobs a week that I felt I was qualified for and excited about. Even more challenging was that my government-focused resume was not resonating with hiring managers in the area.
I knew I had a good resume because the whole time I was looking for jobs in San Diego, I was getting calls from hiring managers about positions in Washington, DC. While it was encouraging to hear from hiring managers, it was immensely frustrating not to see any success at our new duty station. I attended the online resume training session and received helpful insights on how to soften the “government” language on my resume, highlight my versatile skills, and reorganize information to make more of an impact so that non-government positions would see that I had a lot to offer.
I found the experience of working with MSCCN valuable. I anticipate attending the resume training again whenever we change duty stations and I am looking for a new job. Knowing that I’ve had a critical eye review my resume certainly makes me feel more confident sending it out to hiring managers.
