If you have a goal that you aren’t meeting, this article is for you. Whether it be education, something in your personal life, a career, I have really simple advice for you.
Two words. Show up.
Want to earn your degree or that certificate?
Show up to the class. Show up to study. Show up to office hours. Show up to the exam.
Want to run a half-marathon?
Show up on short-run days. Show up on speed work days. Show up on long run days.
Want to make a career change?
Show up to the job fair. Show up to the interview. Show up to access the resources afforded you.
If you haven’t been showing up at all, start small.
You don’t have to show up all day every day, but you do have to take charge of and responsibility for the impact of your inaction and action.
So, identify the small or mini-goals that can help you reach your larger goal.
Then, tackle them one at a time.
It’s okay to stumble. It’s okay to have setbacks, but it’s not okay to do nothing.
If you’ve been showing up, but not getting the results you want, then it’s time to rethink what “showing up” looks like.
If you were preparing for a PT test, but you kept failing to improve your run time, you’d try something else.
Insanity really is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
So, consider a new version of “showing up” if your old version just isn’t cutting it.
Honestly ask yourself, what am I doing to show up, and how is it working or not working?
If you aren’t meeting your career goals, talk to an Employment Specialist. Take some job readiness classes. Identify what showing up looks like and then do so.
Please don’t mistake my tone for dismissal of the difficulty you are facing or the severity of the circumstances. There are many real problems we all face in reaching out goals.
Still, many people are their own worst enemies when it comes to reaching their goals, and if you are one of them, I’m here to tell you to “show up.”
You don’t have to go it alone, but you do have to take the first step.
And if you goal is career-related, we at CASY & MSCCN are here to help you show up.
