The Hazelwood Act is an educational benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependents with a tuition exemption of up to 150 hours at qualified higher education institutions. Check all qualifications carefully.

Health Care and Mental Health Resources: Houston boasts one of the best Veterans Affairs Regional Hospitals in the state with additional clinics located throughout the Houston area. In addition, Tricare providers are located throughout as are US Family Health Plan providers. Houston also has a world-renowned Medical Center with state-of-the-art treatment centers and one of the best veteran hiring programs! For mental health assistance, visit http://www.houstontx.gov/vetaffairs/Healthcare and find a program in your area.

Support Services: Hundreds of nonprofit organizations around Houston offer support services for veterans and families. The United Way of Greater Houston is currently working to connect these organizations to improve accessibility.

CASY & MSCCN have vetted partners that provide housing assistance for homeless and low income Veterans, hotel accommodations for travelling job seekers, gas cards, and free clothing for interviews (Dress for Success and Career Gear).

In 2007 the City of Houston and Harris County joined together to launch the Returning Veterans Initiative, an effort to ease the transition for thousands of veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq wars returning to the Greater Houston Area. Under this initiative, the City of Houston created the Office of Veteran’s Affairs, which publishes a directory of local veteran services.

Mentoring and networking opportunities can connect Veterans with peers who may provide a leg up on the competition for civilian employment.
