1. For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred during the period beginning September 11, 2001 and ending on a future date prescribed by Presidential proclamation or law as the last date of Operation Iraqi Freedom, OR

2. Between August 2, 1990 and January 2, 1992, OR

3. For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred after January 31, 1955 and before October 15, 1976. OR

4. In a war, campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized or between April 28, 1952 and July 1, 1955.

Applicants receiving these preferences are further divided into Preference Eligible Groups (which we’ll discuss next time). Preference points are added to the score an applicant receives when agencies use a ranking system to identify “best qualified” applicants.

Using Preference: The Job Announcement for any Federal position will include a “How to Apply” Section that provides important information about how to submit your application as well as what information is required to complete your application. Common Application Materials include: the Federal Resume (completed in USAJOBS.gov), Academic Transcripts, Certifications if required, Cover Letter (can be stored in USAJOBS.gov or uploaded to USA Staffing Application Manager), and Assessment Questionnaire – specific to job/agency (completed in Application Manager).

Applying for 5-Point Veterans’ Preference?

In addition to required documents above, you must also submit DD-214, "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty” to claim 5-Point Veterans’ Preference.

Are you a Disabled Veteran or Applying for 10-Point Veterans’ Preference?

You must submit DD-214, "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty” and SF-15, “Application for 10-Point Veteran Preference” to claim 10-Point Veterans’ Preference

Failure to submit all required materials can result in your not being considered for a position or not receiving preference that would make you a more competitive candidate.
