Ask the Expert:

Want a New Job in the New Year?

Better Get Moving.

By Amy Rossi

January is the magical time of year where we shake off the holiday sugar high and jump back into our daily grind. The New

Year plays out with a focus on resolve, rebirth, and rejuvenation. We charge into it with renewed hope that this year will be better than the last. Many of us are laser-focused on PERSONAL goals.

With each new year, I read the constant social media vows to read more books, lose weight, start a new habit, quit a bad habit, and above all, to see this year be different from the last. However, amidst all of these New Year’s resolutions, I rarely see any claims focused on building a better, more fulfilling, stable career.

With each of these resolutions, the early bird often gets the worm. Complete your workout early in the day, you are more likely to reach your movement goal. Plan your menu at the beginning of the week, and you are more likely to stick with healthy food instead of grabbing take-out.

The early bird does get the worm, it’s true.

But the early bird adage applies to more than your goals to read more, get fit, and do better in general in your personal life. It’s true in the job search as well.

In the New Year, employers also want to hit the ground running. Like you,

they have goals for the new year, and they want to see them realized as soon as possible (you aren’t the only one who likes the rush of positive momentum). Many are looking to fill vacancies in departments, left open for various reasons over the holiday, and are working to build programs back to maximum strength. But they need applicants to consider for their positions, and sometimes, as the new year arrives, their stacks are dwindling.
