CHALLENGE: I have been a stay at home mother for the past 11 years. Though I had a successful active duty navy career and a robust network of references through the navy reserves, it was still a challenge to document the critical 12 months of experience required for most federal jobs. And the reality was, my professional experience was reaching a 10 year expiration date. My confidence level was low, and I hadn’t written a resume in several years.
ASSISTANCE: Ms. Hay was my biggest fan and coach. She offered critical resume advice and editing and directed me to several online courses. While I was throwing spaghetti on the walls and hoping it would stick, she helped me to focus my efforts and narrow my target employment opportunities.
RESULTS: Equipped with a stronger resume and experience at applying for jobs in both the corporate and federal sectors, I was able to crack the code on USAjobs.gov and get to the interview. Once there, my navy experience helped me to land a GS-12 position with the US Small Business Administration, Office of Disaster Assistance.
VALUE: I believe the key is knowing yourself and understanding how to market your skills sets, even when you think you don’t have any! Job searching can be humbling and frustrating, but I learned key lessons from each rejection letter and finally, the stars aligned and I got the job!
