3. Focus on your follow-up. Your resume will speak to your skills and talents, but only you are capable of speaking for your hustle and whether or not you’ll fit into an office’s culture or mission. When given the opportunity, express your interest—in a position, in a company, in an event. Make it a priority to follow up on a networking meeting, a chance coffee encounter, a thank you note to a recruiter or hiring committee member… If you submit a form via a larger site and don’t get a confirmation from the company that they have your information, double check just in case. Make your job search as personal for them as it is for you.

4. Be prepared for flexible formatting. You know that digital formatting is a given when it comes to uploading your application to larger job sites and being prepared to email your information to a recruiter. However, you should also consider moments when you may need a hard copy (think: job fair, networking

event), and what the standards are for your industry. If you’re in a profession that requires a portfolio, you should have a digital portfolio of your work, and may want to consider a professional website (which you should also feature on your business card and in your signature block).

5. An Interview, three ways. These days, the job market tends to feature three types of interviews: the phone interview, the Skype interview, and the in-person interview. While these interviews may vary in terms of the number of people you will be speaking with (a call or a Skype interview can come with more than one interviewer), often a candidate’s preparation does not vary.

Although you may have prepared for an in-person or phone interview, these skills don’t necessarily transfer to a Skype interview. While there will naturally be some cross over, you need to be prepared for the variations of each interview
