Why cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is a growing field, and specialists and analysts are in demand. The Department of Labor forecasts a 28% increase in cybersecurity jobs over the next decade, which significantly outpaces growth in other industries and careers. Small to large companies, private to public sector—any and every organization can become the victim of cyber attack and,
therefore, will need the expertise that a cybersecurity professional can bring.
Service members and Veterans are uniquely positioned to fill many of these roles. Some will come out of military careers rooted in analytics, information technology, or cybersecurity, making for an easy transition to civilian cybersecurity positions.
But even if you weren’t an IT specialist in the military, you still have some unique experiences that, with the right education and training, can make you a good candidate for cybersecurity positions. These unique experiences include, but are not limited to, having a security clearance, a history of successfully working in secure networking
environments, and an analytical awareness of security issues.
With the increasing demand for cybersecurity experts and offers of a solid salary and benefits package, the cybersecurity industry has a lot to offer prior service members and Veterans.
Where can you find cybersecurity jobs?
Cybersecurity jobs can be found in federal and state governments, the military sector, and the private sector. Private sector jobs include information technology firms, financial institutions, private businesses, especially the E-commerce sector, and healthcare.
Even if an organization or industry doesn’t necessarily seem like an ideal cybersecurity fit, check again. As more and more of our lives go online, the need for cybersecurity will increase across fields and industries. To that end, organizations will need to recruit cybersecurity specialists or information technology specialists with a strong background in security, even if they’ve never had to do so in the past.
