Put it on Paper.
If you’ll be applying for work, which we assume you will, you’ll need to get your resume together. Ideally, you should already have a resume that you just need to update but, if not, take this time to draft and polish a strong master resume from which you can pull to create targeted resumes for specific job postings you find.
Ask professors and mentors to act as references, if you require professional references, who can speak to your work ethic. Also, don’t forget the resources available through your school’s employment office to help you with materials. (And, of course, don’t forget to be in contact with MSCCN and CASY!)
Get Connected.
Hopefully, you’ve begun to build a network with your classmates and instructors. Now, it’s time to expand that network to include professionals in your chosen field. Network by attending job fairs and learning about companies in your area. If you don’t have a LinkedIn® account, sign up for one and set it up to start connecting with professionals in your area.
Don’t forget about other social media, like Facebook and/ or Twitter, to reach out to personal contacts about employment--specifically let them know what type of position and where you are looking to work. *This might be a good time to clean up your social media presence in general.
Take the Next Step.
Even though graduation is a few months away, it’s not too early to start applying for positions. Some companies will participate in job fairs on campuses or virtually, and many companies will be looking to fill positions early with promising students who are soon to graduate. Some companies offer special hiring programs for recent graduates, so make sure to ask when networking.
Just like with most goals in life, moving from school to a career requires planning and focus. While you can wait until you’ve graduated to start the process of preparing for the job search, starting earlier can limit the downtime you spend between graduation and day one of your new job. So, as you are finishing your degree, focus on the next goal—obtaining your next job!
Plus, starting now gives you the chance to test your resume and potentially your interview skills if you are invited to interview for positions. Further, depending on your field and your location, the market may require that you spend more time searching for and interviewing for positions.
