How long have you been a military spouse? 20 years
Tell us about how you got to where you are in your career.
I was a broker when I married my husband, but it wasn’t a sustainable military spouse career since we had five children in 7 years and moved 11 times in 13 years.
I “created” a new job while becoming a master at saving money, and it allowed us to pay off 40K in consumer debt in only 2.5 years. This new skill also allowed me to volunteer my newfound expertise at the Airman and Family Readiness Center. The Air Force Aid Society commissioned a film about my money savings seminar, and it became a part of the financial plan for 120 bases worldwide.
This actvity caught the attention of a publisher, which led to my first book, as well as speaking engagements, thus launching a new career.
Fifteen books and 1800 media appearances later, I have a fulfilling new career that was birthed in the adversity of an unemployed spouse in a mobile military lifestyle.
What one piece of advice do you have for military spouses starting on their professional journeys?
Life isn’t based on your circumstances, but how you respond to your circumstances. Be open to the evolution of the new you, and there may be a pleasant surprise wrapped up in the unlikely package called “change.”
