General Mountaineering Boots These boots are used on Rainier, the Mexico and Ecuador Volcanoes, and Elbrus. This is the largest category of mountaineering boots. They should be insulated, have rigid soles and be crampon compatible, making them perfect for glacier travel. General mountaineering boots can be single- or double-layer, leather or plastic and will be sturdier and more supportive than approach boots.
Plastic vs. Leather These days, leather boots tend to be more popular than plastic as they are lighter and offer a more precise fit. However, plastic boots can be a great option for several reasons: The combination of a plastic outer plus an inner liner helps prevent hot spots and blisters by reducing friction directly against your foot, as the inner liner creates a barrier between your foot and the boot. Most rental programs, including ours, offer plastic boots. Plastic boots also require less maintenance in cold and wet conditions, because their removable liners can be dried out overnight.

Single vs. Double Boots While both single (no removable liner) and double boots (outer shell with a removable liner) are well suited for a variety of mountains, they each have their advantages and disadvantages. Single boots are lighter than double boots, but they are not as warm. Double boots are easier to maintain on longer expeditions, as the liner can be removed for drying. Some models even have liner boots that can be used on their own as camp booties. Many climbers find that single boots are more comfortable due to softer materials and a more flexible upper. They do, however, have a break-in period. Double boots typically have a looser fit and may feel bulkier on your feet. They are also more rigid due to their stiffer outer shell, but require a shorter break-in period. Whether you choose single or double, make sure to test them out prior to your climb.
