“A base layer should be able to keep you dry and insulated under your other layers or act as an outerlayer in warmer temps. I prefer a hooded 1/2 or 1/4 zip so it has the biggest range of uses. I also prefer a wool or wool blend to get the most out if it without smelling myself."
"Unless it is full on pouring rain, which calls for a hard shell, I will always rely on a soft shell. It has a more athletic fit and is made with strecth fabric, making it a great active piece."
"A hard shell is my emergency layer at the bottom of my pack and is only broken out when the weather is bad. This is the jacket that I hope I never use, but when I do need it, it better be bomber."
"All my layers are sized to fit well with the layer below. In super cold conditions I know I'll be wearing all my layers so they need to work together."
"I like a full zip on my insulating pieces. I am pulling them on and off a lot during the climb. Having a full zip is much easier then trying to pull a layer over my climbing helmet."
