Contributors MIKE WOOLNOUGH Mike says he’s just an ordinary guy who started riding at the age of 45 and then discovered the magic of MTBing. We say he’s one tough guy and when you read his essay on why he puts himself through the agony and the ecstasy of ultra-endurance races, like the Freedom Challenge and the Munga, on p48, we’re sure you’ll agree! Follow his adventures on his blog: mikewoolnough.blogspot.com JOEL MEINTJES Joel’s love for the simple two-wheeled machine supersedes everything in his life. He loves building bikes and you’ll often find him tinkering away at his fast and fun XC race steed, searching for ways to improve performance and maximise the stoke levels. The next best thing is sharing all these experiences with riders. He gives a rundown of the best bikes to tackle a race like the Absa Cape Epic on p84. YOLANDI DU TOIT Yolandi is a proud brand ambassador for Garmin South Africa and has been racing bikes for the better part of 20 years. She started out on skinny tyres but has been racing on dirt for more than a decade now. Check out her Colin Mayer race review on p36. Her motto? If coffee and a rusk can’t fix it, then sleep probably will. Follow her on Instagram @yolanditoit JENNY RISVEDDS Jenny won an Olympic medal at the age of 22 in Rio and finished first in the Virgin Active Mixed category in 2017. Then she took a bit of a break from the cycling world. And now she’s back with her own dream team, partnering with five-times Absa Cape Epic winner Annika Langvad for the 2020 race. She tells us about her hopes and dreams on p54. 14 | MTB | look what we have for you LUKE LOCKHART-ROSS Advertising copywriter-turned- cyclist-turned-cycling writer and content creator, Luke’s love for bikes and the cycling industry shines through his words as he tells tales of two- wheels and far-away trails. When he’s not behind his desk at the Absa Cape Epic HQ, you’ll find him out on the roads and in the mountains that surround Cape Town. Give him a follow @lukelockierides. NICK MUŽÍK You’ll spot homegrown photographer Nick’s pics throughout the pages of this magazine. Nick lives in Cape Town with his wife and two kids and says his life filled with activity and adventure has led to an understanding of his subject matter and the ability to create powerful images. Like a true Capetonian, he loves to surf, ride bikes and travel. Follow Nick’s adventures on Instagram @muzikstation MIKE NIXON One of the four remaining Last Lions – those legends who have done every single Absa Cape Epic since inception – says he will only stop riding the race when his wife, who has gotten used to the solitude from December to March, wants him back. Mike partnered with another Last Lion on a 1 761km training ride through the Cape. Read all about it on page 96.
