South Georgia has long been known for quality athletes , so there ’ s not great surprise that two local people are doing well in the Special Olympics .

“ Doing well ,” in this case , means competing in the world Special Olympics in Italy next year , and that ’ s unexpectedly awesome .
But the jaw-dropping part is that Jeremiah Spence and Jayda Hughes from Colquitt County , Georgia , are competing in snow skiing .
The story of how that came to be is in this issue of Moultrie Scene magazine .
If you ’ re impressed with Spence ’ s and Hughes ’ accomplishments , consider donating to the Special Olympics to help them with the costs of going to the event next March . As our article explains , they have not only travel costs but equipment needs to meet as well .
Closer to home , former Observer Sports Editor Wayne Grandy tells the story behind the Fundamental Factory , a Moultrie business that teaches young athletes the finer points of baseball and softball — hitting , fielding and pitching . Founded in 2019 by Greg Tillery and Tony Kirkland — leaders from the Colquitt County High School athletic program — the Fundamental Factory has outgrown its original location as word has spread beyond Moultrie .
We leave athletics behind for our third major feature of this issue . Adelia Ladson joined the Moultrie Federated Guild several years ago . Through conversations with other members , she conveys what makes the longtime local women ’ s club so special both to the membership and to the community it serves .
Also in this issue of Moultrie Scene , we present our second work of fiction . Ladson , who grew up on Army bases as her father was deployed around the world , uses that experience to tell the story of a young mother raising her family while her husband is deployed to Iraq .
We ’ d love to hear what you think about the fiction stories — and all the other parts of Moultrie Scene . Email me at kevin . hall @ gaflnews . com .
