Time To Check ThePlanter ... By Jeremy M . Kichler , UGA Extension , Colquitt County Extension Coordinator , jkichler @ uga . edu

Planting time is around the corner and growers need to have their planters ready to go . Planter breakdowns can cost growers both time and money . For growers to maximize yield a uniform stand is very important . Let ’ s discuss some points to consider to make sure the planter is ready to go when its time to plant .. Parallel Linkages -Stand behind each planter row-unit and wiggle it up and down and left to right for any unnecessary movement in the parallel linkages . Please adjust and replace worn linkages and bushings to make sure row units are secured and tight on the planter . Drive system-Check all the chains , idlers , sprockets , and bushings , and replace any worn parts . Drive chains need to be snug and they need to be lubricated regularly . Tire pressure-Check and maintain proper air pressure in the tires per manufacturer based on the weight of the planter and field conditions . Double disc openers -Check that the doubledisc openers are sharp and within the diameter tolerance outlined by the manufacturer . Replace if they aredull or worn morethan half an inch of their original diameter . You can use a business card to ensure adequate contact between the disc openers at the 4 o ’ clock position . Gauge wheels -Inspect the gauge wheels for any cracks or wear . Please adjust the gauge wheels so that they run right up against the disc openers but just enough so they can easily be turned by hand with slight pressure . Gauge wheels should move freely up and down without sticking in any position . Row cleaners -Check row cleaners for any wear and replace any bearings if they are not turning freely . Seed Meters -Inspect each seed meter thoroughly for any wear or damaged parts including vacuum seals , and brush scraper . This will help eliminate doubles and skips which can impact yield . Ensure that the correct crop kit is installed in the meter . Seed tube -Check seed tubes forany cracks and wear at the bottom . Seed tubes should also be cleaned properly to clear any debris or obstructions . Make sure that the seed sensor is secured properly to the tube and working . Closing wheels -Growers need to check to see if closing wheels are centered directly over the row . Inspect closing wheels for any wear or play in the arms and replace parts as needed . Vacuum -The inspection of the whole vacuum system is important . Key things to look for includes the hydraulic motor , fan , and hoses for any wear , or lose fittings . Check vacuum hoses to see if they are properly attached to the manifold and the seed meters on each row-unit . Technology-Check that the GPS receiver and planter display have the most recent software upgrades installed and are functioning properly . Please make sure to back up planting data from the previous season on a computer or storage device before the start of the season . Please check seed depth , placement , and seed to soil contactduring the first pass and make the necessary adjustments to optimize planter performance . If you have any questions please contact your local county Extension agent .
