“ It didn ’ t start out that way . We added behind us , beside us , over the years ,” he said .
By the ’ 70s , the dealership expanded and diversified , including rotary mowers and adding the Allis-Chalmers line , from tractors to grain combines , to their line-up .
Scott DeMott said that it was around that time that Roscoe DeMott took a step back from the company , handing things over to George and Jimmie DeMott .
“ Sometime along in those years , the ’ 70s and ’ 80s , those two became the majority owners ,” Scott DeMott said .
Stewart DeMott , Scott ’ s brother and the vice president of DeMott Tractor Company , said that by 1986 , George DeMott had bought out Jimmie DeMott ’ s share of the company . “ Our dad became the sole proprietor ,” he said . Soon after , Scott DeMott returned from college , arriving at the company to take his place in helping the family business .
In 1987 , Roscoe DeMott passed away , with the
DeMott Tractor Company persevering through the loss and expanding into the irrigation business .
“ We sold center pivot irrigation systems , we started out with Zimmatic ,” Scott DeMott said , “ And , we were with Zimmatic for 30 years , we just recently changed to Valley . We sell Valley center pivots now .”
By 1991 , Stewart had graduated from college to work at the company and diversification was still at the forefront of the company ’ s goals .
Adding Polaris products , which included all-terrain vehicles , to their line up , the DeMott Tractor Company also sought out Case International for their dealership in 1998 .
“ Massey did not sell cotton equipment and some of the other stuff that Case had , so for our area cotton was big ,” Scott DeMott said , “ And so we thought it would be beneficial to have a cotton picker so we took on Case International .”
In 2011 , Scott DeMott Sr .’ s son , Scott “ Scotty ” DeMott Jr ., joined the family business soon after graduation from Valdosta State University .
