Colquitt County schoolchildren got a true snow day this year , and it was wonderful . More than 4 inches of snow fell on Moultrie and the surrounding area on Jan . 22 , and it stayed around for days .
The unusual weather brought delight as children ( and adults ) played in the snow , built snowmen , made snow angels and threw snowballs — activities usually reserved for places farther north .
But , by the time you read this , the snow will be far in the rearview mirror and we ’ ll be gearing up for the last holiday of winter : St . Patrick ’ s Day .
Falling only three days before the start of spring , St . Paddy ’ s Day decks the world in Irish green — the color of spring ’ s new growth — and it gets us ready for the new season and for Easter , which is right around the corner .
Adelia Ladson went looking for the roots of the holiday , and she found quite a bit about Ireland ’ s patron saint , the namesake of St . Patrick ’ s Day . Join her for the journey in this issue of Moultrie Scene .
Ladson was particularly busy this month , with two other stories in this issue as well .
She investigated a nearby farm that ’ s home to a llama and an alpaca — and she can now tell you the difference between the two . Amanda Castellow owns the animals and sometimes takes them to retirement homes or offers them for parties . She calls them The Party Pack .
Ladson went along during The Party Pack ’ s visit to Willow Lodge Personal Care Home . Learn more and see the photos starting on Page 10 .
In the third of her three articles , Ladson caught up with leaders of The Arts Center of Moultrie , where the Kaleidoscope Children ’ s Museum is completing a major upgrade . Ladson was once heavily involved in The Arts Center herself , and the visit combined her nostalgia with excitement over the new offerings at Kaleidoscope .
Kendrick Givens pitched in with a profile of the Women ’ s Federated Club , an African-American women ’ s club that ’ s contributed in great ways to the success of Moultrie and Colquitt County . Read about their efforts and their motivations starting on Page 30 .
Rounding out this issue is a travel article from Kay and David Scott of Valdosta , frequent contributors to Moultrie Scene . This month , they ’ re examining why a stay at a national park lodge is so expensive .
Check out all that Moultrie Scene offers this month , and if you know of someone or something we should profile in a future issue , please drop me an email at a new address : Kevin . Hall @ moultrieobserver . com . I look forward to hearing from you .
