With schools out for the summer , local residents are looking for a chance to get outside . This issue of Moultrie Scene has a couple of suggestions .
Jessi Flowers , sports reporter for The Moultrie Observer , looks into “ the fastest growing sport in America .” Pickleball is also the fastest growing sport in Colquitt County . The Moultrie YMCA has had pickleball courts for a few years , but the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Authority recently added some too . Flowers offers a basic primer on the game itself , plus interviews with Dr . Seth Berl , who helped pickleball gain traction here , and with other sportsmen who are picking up their paddles .
If organized sport isn ’ t your thing , though , contributor Katherine Russell offers a wilder option : kayaking . A longtime outdoorswoman , Russell tells of her connections with Wakulla Springs and the Wacissa River of Northern Florida . Russell said Wakulla Springs is the easier paddle , but the Wacissa has its attractions too .
Also in this issue of Moultrie Scene , contributor Akilah C . Clarke profiles two related organizations at PCOM South Georgia . Brothers in Medicine and Sistahs in Medicine both have dual roles . Each was created to help minority students succeed at the Moultrie medical school , but both have also reached out to the community with health screenings and meetings .
Observer reporter Kasmira Smith swings by Doerun to talk with the owners of Naturally Cool Gems and Jewels . The store on Broad Avenue combines Andrea Burgess ’ s jewelry background and Anthony Michniak ’ s experience with gems and stones to offer a unique variety of stones , gems , jewelry and fossils .
