Pickled red onions from the garden . Find out how to prepare them at lazydogfarm . com
T : Yeah , a variety called the Robust . The kids loved it , we loved it – football Sundays are so much better with homemade popcorn . We just get it out of the freezer and pop it right up . B : Our five-year-old boy is always looking for a way to make a dollar , so we joked with him that he could have his own little vegetable stand . So out of the blue we set it up for him one Sunday and he made about $ 100 out by the road .
Do the kids help y ’ all out in the garden ? Are they of an age where they can do that without causing more harm than help ? T : There are a few things to do where I won ’ t necessarily call them to say “ Hey y ’ all ! Let ’ s go and hang out in the garden today !” Tasks that are very detailed or real specific . B : They cannot help with planting . That ’ s one thing , there ’ s just too little for that . Not precise enough . T : Sometimes when we ’ re doing transplants , they can put the little plugs in the ground . Harvesting , especially crops like corn , pumpkins , potatoes , where you don ’ t have to be real exact and careful … B : Tomatoes , they ’ re real good at that . Our threeyear-old will stay out there with us for an hour , solid . I see now why farmers have a lot of children . Seeing my boys pick the sweet potatoes , I thought , well , if I had five more kids …. ( laughs )
Have y ’ all ever been able to get volunteers , from your church group or community ? T : When I broke my back we had a lot of volunteers .
We were overwhelmed with people coming just to help keep the garden going . B : We haven ’ t really offered it up before . Prior to Travis ’ injury , we never really felt overwhelmed . T : Around harvest time in spring or fall , we ’ ll start taking extra produce and making bags out of it like we used to for the CSA . We load the kids up on Sunday , go get an ice cream , and swing by three random peoples ’ houses . B : And drop it off . Or give it to neighbors we don ’ t know down the road . Just knock on the door and talk . Sometimes you have to explain it to folks , they ’ re surprised , but they usually take it . Lots of folks wouldn ’ t answer their doors , though ! We ’ d have to go to two or three houses before they ’ d answer . T : It ’ s like , I know you ’ re home ! I see three cars at home ! ( laughs ) B : And it was nice to do that with the boys . They would get really excited to give someone something , which we thought was an important lesson to teach them .
Now , is there a story behind the name “ Lazy Dog Farm ”? T : I wish we had a great story about the name , but we really don ’ t . We just came up with based on the fact that we ’ ve always had a couple dogs around here — dogs that don ’ t do much other than eat and sleep !
Before we wrap up , is there anything else y ’ all would like to share ? T : Yes ! Our new website just launched – lazydogfarm . com . B : It has all the YouTube videos there , vlogs , recipes … T : We ’ ll have merchandise for sale , and a written blog too , that goes into even more detail than our videos . Plus our fall planting schedule , if folks are interested in that . So come see us online ! We ’ d love to meet you .
Travis and Brooklyn post new videos on their website , YouTube channel , and Facebook page three times a week – Monday , Wednesday , and Friday at 8 p . m . EST .
