Anew year is upon us . Twelve months ago , everyone was hoping 2021 would be better than the year that preceded it , and as 2021 comes to a close , we find ourselves hoping the same thing about 2022 . The coronavirus pandemic that started in

2019 and engulfed 2020 dragged on into 2021 , but there were a lot of bright spots , most notably the COVID-19 vaccines that were first approved for emergency use in December 2020 . The vaccines are not 100 % effective in preventing the disease , but they do offer some protection and they have been shown to reduce the severity of the disease for those who do get it . They have allowed much of life to return to normal .
Certainly there are still struggles , but we ’ ve reached the point where we can look forward to the new year and make plans that resemble the ones we made before COVID .
Moultrie Scene has reached out to groups in our community — the city and county governments , the chamber of commerce , the hospital , the Parks and Recreation Authority and the school system — to see what plans they have for 2022 . See what the future may hold in the pages of Moultrie Scene .
The pandemic touched many aspects of the community . A support group for amputees had held only one meeting when COVID fears shut it down in March 2020 , but organizers took to Zoom to continue their work . Now Life Unlimbited meets in person in a donated storefront that includes a supply of medical accessories it provides to those in need . Founder Monica Prestridge tells her story in this issue of Moultrie Scene .
And meet a couple from the Funston area whose gardening tips are seen all around the world . Travis and Brooklyn Key operate Lazy Dog Farms . They ’ re not full-time farmers , but they plant multiple plots of vegetables and tell their followers what works and what doesn ’ t as they bring them to fruition .
In spite of everything , Moultrie Scene had a good 2020 . We received Magazine of the Year awards from our parent company , CNHI , as well as from the Georgia Press Association last summer , for work we did in 2020 . Then , just last month , we were recognized in a magazine cover contest throughout CNHI for the Holiday Issue . Many thanks to photographer Jill Stringfellow and designer Derek Schaper for their work on that cover .
As 2022 begins , we look forward to another year of telling your stories . If you have any story ideas , call me at ( 229 ) 985-4545 or email me at kevin . hall @ gaflnews . com .
