Sid Collins celebrates 45 years of selling one-of-a-kind finds words & photography by Adelia Ladson

From the age of 12 , Sid Collins knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life , which is something most people can ’ t honestly say . “ I knew I wanted a clothing store since I was 12 and I saved up and got ready to open my store ,” he said .

He started toward that goal when he got a job working at Belk ’ s in the men ’ s department when he was 15 , eventually , becoming a division manager and buyer by the time he was 18 and continuing to save his money so that he could open his own store .
He then left Belk ’ s to work at Al Dixon ’ s Menswear in Thomasville for a year and , then , came back home to buy Brown ’ s Men Shop , which didn ’ t work out , so , he opened his own store at 16 First Avenue in downtown Moultrie , in 1979 .
“ Sid ’ s Fashions for Men , Where the Men of Fashion Shop was the name of it ,” he said .
He said that he did that for about a year and a half and then he bought a clothing store out , in 1982 , that was just down from him , on the corner , and moved his store there . That same year , he bought the buildings where he is now located and put antiques in it .
He said that when he first opened his clothing store , he didn ’ t have enough displays and racks but he had some of this grandmother ’ s furniture and he put that in the store to use for displays . He said people wanted to buy them .
Sid ’ s Antiques has an incredibly vast variety of items from jewelry and Chinaware to antique furniture and Oriental rugs .
