It was with great sadness we learned Aug. 7 of the death of Dr. Randy Benner. Reporter Adelia Ladson had written for this issue about Benner’ s work with CrossRoads Gospel Rescue Mission, and photographer Jill Stringfellow had already taken his picture for the cover.
Benner’ s contributions to Moultrie are extensive. Not only did he revive CrossRoads, he was instrumental in founding Heritage Church, now one of the largest churches in the community, and in founding Hope House to help young mothers. He did none of those things alone— and he was quick to tell you so— but he made a profound impact on a lot of people in Moultrie and Colquitt County.
Others will now carry on his work, but it’ s too soon to speculate who’ ll step up into the gap that his passing leaves.
As for Moultrie Scene, we leave you with this: The last profile he participated in. We made small changes in light of his passing, but the bulk of the story is how it was originally planned: Telling the story of Benner’ s contributions even as they were ongoing.
This issue of Moultrie Scene also looks at students returning to school. Some new rules are in effect.
Adelia Ladson participated in Active Shooter training with local law enforcement. She shares what she learned.
Faith Morrell contributes an article about the Colquitt County High School 50th Regiment Marching Band, exploring the band’ s history.
