Trudie Hill presented a student with the Trudie Hill Achievement of Excellence Award for outstanding accomplishments in reading and math during Doerun Elementary School ’ s recent Honors Day program . During her tenure on the school board , Hill has served as chairman and vice chairman several times and , on the state and national levels , she has served on the Georgia School Boards Association as a member of the Delegate Assembly , Governmental Operations Committee , Advisory Council , Nominating Committee and as a legislative liaison . She was also a member of the National School Boards Association Federal Relations Network .
Hill was the first of seven siblings to go to college , attending both Albany State College and Valdosta State College , where she received her degree in english / speech and certifications in mental retardation and interrelated studies . She also received a certification in data collection .
“ My parents were my first inspiration because they were my first teachers in our home . They had a strong belief in education for their children . A special time was set aside to learn essential life skills and write my name in cursive ,” Hill said , when asked in an earlier interview .
She also said that she learned how to make change because her parents owned a grocery store that was next door to their home . She said that when she entered first grade , she was already familiar with most of the basic skills taught in class .
