The 911 Center , which opened in 1998 , is responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls
When to call 911 ...
• Medical Emergencies – Chest pains , choking , difficulty speaking or breathing , and other serious medical problems .
• Fires – Even small fires can spread rapidly and become a dangerous situation .
• Crimes in progress – Assaults , burglaries , fights , etc . Any crimes that are in progress or just occurred where the offender could still be in the area .
• Vehicle accidents – Crashes with injuries , blocked roadways , or fluid leaks .
When not to call 911 ...
• Noise Complaints – Loud parties , music , and barking dog complaints should use the non-emergency number ( 229 ) 616-7470 .
• Power Outages – To report a power outage or ask about when power will be restored , you should call your power provider .
• Information – Need a phone number , want to know where to pay a ticket , or want a weather report ? Call 411 or use the internet to get phone numbers ; and get a battery powered radio for weather updates during storms .
What to do when calling 911 ...
• Know your location – Know your address , closest intersections , and / or mile markers . Don ’ t rely on the 911 operator to know where you are .
• Answer the questions – 911 Operators ask a lot of questions to determine who is best to send to each call . This information is also relayed to responding units so they can be better prepared for your emergency .
• Follow instructions – 911 officers are trained to help keep you safe and to give first aid instructions if needed . They can assist in giving CPR instructions , walk you through how to do the Heimlich maneuver for choking victims , or tell you how to stop or slow bleeding .
• Don ’ t hang up – Stay calm , speak clearly , and stay on the phone until you are instructed to hang up by the dispatcher . Sometimes you will be asked to stay on the line to give current information about your emergency . The dispatcher is sending the units but will continue to ask multiple questions to get as much information as possible for the responding units . to all of Colquitt County ’ s agencies , including Colquitt County EMS , Search and Rescue , city and county fire departments , the Moultrie Police Department , Colquitt County Sheriff ’ s Office , Berlin Police Department , Doerun Police Department and Norman Park Police Department .
Theresa Warburg was named director in 2006 . There are 21 people staffed at the center . Each shift consists of four communication officers and one parttime employee on each rotation . A program , Computer Aided Dispatch ( CAD ), allows dispatchers to receive and dispatch calls faster . Priority calls are dispatched within one minute and other calls have a two-minute time limit . The center averages 216 calls for service a day . The majority of cell phone calls received by the center are now able to be traced to the caller ’ s location . The center received approximately 70,000 calls in 2022 .
Colquitt County Sheriff ’ s Office Sheriff Rod Howell ( 229 ) 616-7430
The Colquitt County Sheriff ’ s Office is located at 200 Veterans Parkway North and has 106 employees . Sixty-one of the employees are sworn officers with arrest powers with the balance of 45 being jail officers and clerical personnel . Sheriff : Sheriff Rod Howell was elected and took office Jan . 1 , 2017 . Howell has had a 19-plus-year career in law enforcement with Colquitt County . Uniform Division : Lt . Josh Perry oversees the uniform patrol officers . The Uniform Division patrols approximately 550 square miles within Colquitt County . Courtroom functions : Capt . Nathaniel French . School resource program : Maj . Todd Myrick . Criminal Investigations Division / Training and continuing education : Lt . Ronald Jordan . Business office , personnel , budget and jail operations : Capt . Julius Cox . Chief jailer : Lt . Randy Stephens . Moultrie-Colquitt County Drug Enforcement Team : A joint unit between the sheriff ’ s office and the Moultrie Police Department that focuses on drug-related issues throughout the county and its municipalities . It is led by Lt . Justin Searcy and based at the sheriff ’ s office .
