Contemplating the Rear End

5 . Replacement seat

The final option open to motorcycle riders is to replace the seat with a new unit from an aftermarket specialist . Within this area , there are two sub categories to consider : first there is the “ off the shelf ” option where a company such as Corbin or Sargent will supply their idea of the perfect seat to you for a price ; and the second option is to go for the complete custom seat built just for you . If we consider the first option , the “ off the shelf ” solutions are usually much better than the OE seats as the manufacturer is focussed on the one task – that of seat manufacturing . The downside of this solution is that the manufactures have to make the seat applicable to the most people as possible . This works for a large number of people , but for some who fall outside of the “ norm ” or for whom these off the shelf seats aren ’ t comfortable , they need another option . The second option – that of the bespoke custom seat – provides the rider with a specific seat built around their shape and their requirements . Companies such as Russell ( who provide their “ Day Long ” seat service ) require measurements such as height , weight , inseam length , waist , as well as photographs of the rider sat on the bike , and from this information they are able to make a custom seat built for the riders specific characteristics . These seat are the ultimate solution for riders , however they do come at a price . The cost of a Russell seat is around £ 300- £ 400 and that doesn ’ t get you an additional seat either as you have to send them your current seat to be used as a foundation for the remodelling work . Although expensive , these seats pretty much guarantee a days riding without any noticeable discomfort to the rider ( or pillion as the service extends to pillion seats as well ).
