HEARING PLUGS
Disposables –Very popular form of ear plug, simply because of the cost and the fact they can be
had for pennies a pair when you buy in bulk. There are a few different types of disposable ear
plugs and you may find some work better than others, but as they cost so little it’s not an
expense worth worrying about when looking for a comfortable pair that fit your ears nicely. They
are even cheaper if you have a friend that works in a high noise environment. They tend to be
sponge form and you just squash the end, shove them in and they expand to form a barrier,
simple as really.
Permanent – This is the best option but also the most expensive option by far, a quick look at
Google gives us a range from £18 for soft mold plugs all the way up to £200 for custom molded
to your own ear shape. With the custom fit you do get the best possible protection but you don’t
need that much protection in my opinion! (Dubious MEM will get any ear plug adverts anytime
soon but hey ho!). The amount of reduction you are looking for is bringing the noise level down
to a dB that will not cause damage. Above and beyond that is about comfort and personal choice.
