A European Adventure ? You jest Sir !
Can you still have a proper adventure riding in Europe ? Hardly , I mused as we flew past the dainty little towns of Belgium and Holland . Impossible , I figured while we plodded along the endless fir tree forests and picturesque fjords on perfectly smooth tarmac crossing Finland and Norway . Maybe , I perked up hopeful as we hurried into Hungary , Slovakia and Romania ; possibly , I said to myself when we got lost in the rain , fog and gravel of the Agrafa Mountains in Greece .
But when we got to Crete , I could finally say – yes , absolutely : a proper adventure is still around the corner here , in the largest Greek island of the
Mediterranean Sea . Even Odysseus - the ultimate adventurer of all time hung out in Crete for a while ; the island was home to El Greco , the Renaissance revolutionary and the notorious literary explorer Nikos Kazantzakis . ( It ’ s also home to Jennifer Aniston ’ s dad , although I ’ m a bit hazy as to the escapades of that fine gentleman ).
Everyone has a different definition when it comes to the affairs of motorcycling exploits but the general consensus seems to be this : an adventure must involve a challenge to your bike and your own limits , a factor of the unknown and a thrill of exploration . To our surprise , Crete turned out to be all of the above .
